lip-stick me

my friend S has been rocking a glamourous cherry red lipstick lately and got me thinking about lip color. the closest i come to lipstick is Burts Bees super glossy lip shine, which i love because it’s creamy, shiny, and completely edible. (key for me, because I bite my lips a lot.) because i have a lip biting issue, i never wear lipstick and i haven’t bought any in 11 years. but S got me thinking i should give it a try again.

i have a love/hate relationship with makeup. love because it’s fun. hate because it’s full of gross chemicals and other stuff i really don’t want to know about. despite my affection for bobbie brown, i do my best to only buy products safely rated on this site. (if you want to have fun and possibly scare yourself, grab all your lotion, toothpaste, hair products, and makeup and plug them into the database.) i wasn’t sure how i was going to go about finding lipstick i liked, but happened upon a makeup counter at my sister’s local health food store and found Jane Iredale mineral makeup lipstick.

i went straight for the reddest color they had in stock: Nicole red.

best parts: 1. awesome red hue 2. totally edible: you can bite this stuff of your lips all day and it still won’t do you any harm. 3. it only cost $18 (at least $6-12 less than a lot of great lipsticks.) 4. it got an excellent score for safety. (read more on their website.)

(the sun started setting when i took these pictures, so the red looks more glamorous than it is. also, how do people take pictures of lipstick? seriously: this took me forever. i kept getting creepy close-ups of my lips and face. despite the random hairs blowing in to my face in the first pic, this was the best i could do.)

speaking of lips: i’m a firm believer in protecting them from the sun, especially because i tend to nibble them when they dry out. alba is my go-to sun block of choice, followed up by yes to cucumbers face lotion. (rated here, here, and here.)
